Indian Museum Obtains Rare Colonial Documents 1 Year ago
The Indian Caribbean Museum of Trinidad & Tobago [ICMtt] is pleased to announce that it recently acquired copies of rare colonial documents from Dr. Dennision Moore of Ottawa, Canada. The Trinidad born Dr. Moore is a former Chief of Staff of three Ministers of the Canadian Government and a published author is an avid collector of rare Trinidad books and documents.

As the ICMtt develops it’s research facilities for scholars it is in the continuous process of acquiring documents, books, and other publications that can assist in the greater understanding of the Indian presence in Trinidad & Tobago as well as the Caribbean.

Some of the documents obtained include : [1] Report of the West India Commission 1897 [2] Report of the Committee on Emigration From India to the Crown Colonies 1910 [3] Report Exhibiting the Past and Present State of Her Majesty Colonial Possession - Trinidad 1887 – 1898 [4] Note on Emigration From India by J. Geogheghan 1873 [5] Report From the Select Committee on West India Colonies 1842 [6] Correspondence Relating to the Sugar Industry in the West Indies 1897 [7] 1937 National Geographic Focus on Trinidad [8] Federation: Public Lectures by Eric Williams [9] Federation: We Failed Miserably by CLR James [10] Agreements Showing Indians from Trinidad going to Cuba to work on Sugar Estates there.

The documents are in pristine condition and will offer the researcher a unique insight into the period of indentureship. The agreement of Indians from Trinidad being sent to work in Cuba is information never before revealed and as such is of particular importance.

Dr. Moore informed the ICMtt that large amounts of our nation’s history are located outside Trinidad & Tobago and that unless institutions and nationals attempt to secure our past it will be lost.

After cataloguing the documents will be available to public under supervision of the ICMtt Curator.
