2. RESEARCHER, IFSH, HAMBURG, GERMANY

The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) is seeking to appoint a full-time researcher for a project on counterterrorism policies of the European Union, within the 7th EU Research Framework Program.
Tasks include:

Development of a taxonomy of security policy choices (including traditional and “new” approaches) in EU member states and the relative weight given to counterterrorism policies, based on a comparative analysis of security policy mixes in select EU member states
Analysis of competition and synergies between elements of security policy
Analysis of the political costs and benefits of particular policy mixes used by national governments within the EU
 
The position requires knowledge of methods of policy analysis, including those used in political science. As the project is interdisciplinary and conducted in cooperation with economists, an essential requirement for employment is a sound knowledge of the foundations of economics, including econometrics. Familiarity with the literature on the economics of terrorism is an advantage. Successful candidates are expected to have a good knowledge of core issues in European security policy and counterterrorism policy. The researcher needs to be able to work both theoretically and empirically. Knowledge on the development of indicators for policies and their effects, as well as quantitative methods is an asset.
 
Remuneration is at the level of group 13 - TV-AVH German public service salary scale (about 42k€ gross pay per annum before tax and social security). Project and employment will end by February 2012.
 
Further criteria for selection:
Degree in Social Sciences or Economics at the level of PhD or comparable
A record of publications, particularly on topics related to EU security policy or the economics of terrorism
Excellent English
Good team and communicative skills.
